Three Levels Up, What Makes the Williamsburg Music Hall So Special?

One of the most unique and intriguing attractions in Williamsburg is the Williamsburg Music Hall. Locals and tourists alike visit the Music Hall to get away for the evening and experience some of the best indie rock. It is located on North 6thStreet, just a short distance from 420 Kent’s Williamsburg luxury rentals and Domino Park. Read on to discover what makes the Music Hall such a gem.

History

In 2001, the venue we know today as Music Hall of Williamsburg first opened its doors under the name Northsix. Northsix was a major influencer in bringing live music to Brooklyn, as Manhattan had previously been New York’s home for indie rock and the like.

The venue quickly established itself as a Brooklyn mainstay, earning the title of Best New Rock Club by The Village Voice in 2002. It gained national attention when it was used for filming the opening scene of the 2003 movie School of Rock.

Northsix was briefly closed in March 2003 after booking the punk rock band Leftöver Crack. The New York City Fire Department claimed the shutdown was ordered because of an expired permit, but many fans and clubgoers believed that the Department was retaliating over previous criticism by the band. Northsix reopened after one month.

In 2007, Northsix was faced with a large rent increase and was acquired by the concert promotion company Bowery Presents. The venue was renamed Music Hall of Williamsburg and underwent a series of renovations.

Today

Despite its somewhat rocky history, Music Hall of Williamsburg still has a thriving audience that comes to watch performances almost every night of the week. The venue stays true to its roots with eclectic booking that often features indie rock and underground acts. Its prime location near many Brooklyn luxury apartments gives it an advantage for drawing crowds of all sorts.

The venue can host up to 650 people on its three levels with seats and additional standing room. There are three bars to serve your drinks, and you’ll find plenty of restaurants nearby to grab a bite before or after the show.
