City life isn’t cheap, especially in New York. Fortunately, there are plenty of free things to do without going very far – so long as you can find them. Williamsburg in Brooklyn makes it easy to find free and inexpensive things to on the weekends. To make your job easier, we’ve picked out a few of our favorite price-less things to do in Brooklyn’s favorite neighborhood.
See a Movie in the Park
SummerScreen features a weekly showing in McCarren Park during the months of July and August every Wednesday. Last year’s films included classic like When Harry Met Sally, Die Hard, and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Typically, the last night of the summer they do an “Audience Choice” film where patrons vote on the title. This park is located about a mile – from our Williamsburg apartments.
While it’s a little further afield, Brooklyn Bridge Park offers regular film nights all summer long with their Movie with a View series. Wherever you go, be sure to pack a picnic blanket, chair, and popcorn for the show.
Take a Tour of the Brooklyn Brewery
The beer might not be free, but the learning experience sure is. The Brooklyn Brewery opens to the public every Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. for free tours, tastings ($4 a beer, or 6 for $20), and fun. Tours run on the hour from 1 to 5 p.m.
Those under the age of 21 are welcome to join, so long as they’re accompanied by an adult. Outside food is allowed – yes, that means delivery, too – however, snacks are always available for purchase.
Enjoy a Free Tour of the Neighborhood
There’s no better way to get to know your neck of the woods than by getting a tour around it. So, whether you’re new to Brooklyn or have lived here for years, take a tour of Williamsburg to learn about the neighborhood.
Tours will take you to sites like the towering Russian Orthodox Church, the locally famous Brooklyn Brewery, Brooklyn Savings Bank, Domino Park, and Williamsburg Bridge. Finish your tour at East River State Park for fantastic views of the classic Manhattan skyline. Free Tours By Foot is one of the many companies that offer tours of New York City.
We have the tendency to ignore the things in our own backyard. Williamsburg rentals give you the opportunity to live in a fun neighborhood full of history and culture. But don’t take our word for it – get out there and learn about the place where you live.
